PHOENIX — Each WNBA team will play a record 44 games during the 2025 regular season, according to an exclusive memo sent to Phoenix Mercury “X-Factor” members obtained by Desert Wave Media.
Each team currently plays 40 games during the regular season. Under the new schedule, each team will play 22 games at home and 22 games on the road during the 2025 regular season.
The current Collective Bargaining Agreement allows for each team to play a maximum of 44 games during the regular season.
However, players can opt out of the current CBA by November, which would then see the current CBA expire after the 2025 season.
The WNBA in its first season in 1997 played 28 games with eight franchises, increasing to 30 games (1998), 32 (1999), 34 (2003), 36 (2022), 40 (2023) and now 44 (2025).
The increase in games will coincide with an additional team in the league. Starting next season, the Golden State Valkyries will be the 13th team in the WNBA. The league will expand to 14 teams in 2026 when Toronto’s expansion team will begin playing.
