Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi mum on retirement speculation
The WNBA's all-time leading scorer did not say whether or not she would be retiring after the end of the season on Friday.
PHOENIX — Despite the widespread speculation, Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi did not directly address whether or not she would retire after the end of the season on Friday.
On Monday, the Mercury teased Taurasi potentially retiring with a social media post captioned “If This Is It” that featured a highlight montage of Taurasi’s 20-year career with the Mercury and advertised tickets for the team’s then two remaining home games.
Taurasi, 42, will become a free agent after the end of this season after she signed a two-year contract with the Mercury in February 2023.
“As an athlete, you think you get to write the ending, but the ending just happens sometimes,” Taurasi said Friday. “So I’m just really focused on what’s tomorrow. What this team needs to do to make a playoff push because we have it in us.
“So all my energy, all my attention is towards that. Towards making sure we’re on track in this next week going into the playoffs, that’s my mindset.”
When asked if she would like a retirement tour, the WNBA's all-time leading scorer said she wouldn’t want that type of spectacle.
“Yeah, I won’t be doing no tour,” Taurasi said Friday. “When I go, don’t we just all just go.”
The Mercury (17-20) have already clinched a playoff berth and are locked into finishing sixth or seventh in the standings. With that being said, the Mercury will begin the playoffs on the road and will need to win one of their two road playoff games to get a home playoff game at Footprint Center in the best-of-three first round series.
Phoenix has three regular season games remaining — at Chicago on Sunday, at Los Angeles on Tuesday and vs. Seattle on Thursday.
