PHOENIX — The Phoenix Mercury traded guard Sug Sutton and their 2025 third-round pick to the Washington Mystics in exchange for rights to guard Klara Lundquist on Tuesday.
Sutton, 25, played in 22 games for the Mercury this season and averaged 2.9 points, 1.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 0.6 assists in 14.9 minutes per game.
Sutton will return to Washington after she was drafted by the Mystics with the last pick of the 2020 WNBA Draft (No. 36 overall).
She was waived by Washington before the start of the 2020 season, but signed for the Mystics in August of 2020 and played 12 games that season. She was later waived by the Mystics before the start of the 2021 season.
Sutton spent the next two years out of the WNBA, playing overseas in Poland and Australia, as well as in a semi-pro league in Missouri before signing a training camp with the Mercury before the start of the 2023 season.
The guard out of Texas played in all 40 games for the Mercury last season, averaging 8.2 points, 4.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 26.3 minutes per game.
She started last season on the bench but was inserted into the starting lineup and started 12 games for the Mercury in 2023 after scoring in double figures in nine of the team’s first 11 games.
Sutton recorded the first triple-double in franchise history on Sept. 8, 2023. She tallied 18 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a loss against the Las Vegas Aces.
Lundquist is a 5-foot-8 guard from Sweden who has never played in the WNBA. She will play for Spar Girona in the Spanish Liga Femenina for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Last season, she played in 30 games for Södertälje Basketbollklubb in Sweden's SBL Dam, where she took home league MVP honors, Defender of the Year and Guard of the Year. She averaged 20.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 3.4 steals.
The 24-year-old has also played for the Swedish senior national team since 2016.
Lundquist will not be on the Mercury’s active roster, so the team is currently at 10 players, meaning Phoenix will need to make an additional roster move to be at the league-mandated minimum of 11 players.
