PHOENIX — The Phoenix Mercury waived guards Shyla Heal and Anna Makurat on Wednesday, trimming their training camp roster down to 17 players.
The Mercury will need to cut their roster down to 11-12 players by 2 p.m. MST on Thursday, May 15.
Heal was the last player to come off the bench in Tuesday’s 85-84 preseason loss to the Las Vegas Aces, while Makurat was the third-to-last player to come off the bench on Tuesday, coming in just before guard Megan McConnell.
Heal had three points (on 1-for-3 shooting), seven rebounds, two assists and one turnover in eight minutes in the preseason loss.
Makurat recorded five points (on 2-for-4 shooting), and a turnover in 10 minutes on Tuesday.
Makurat had the worst +/- during the game at a -12, checking in when the Mercury led 64-54 in the third quarter. The Aces then ended the quarter on an 11-2 run.
During Mercury practices and shootarounds, the players are often split into two groups of 7-9 players: those wearing black and those wearing purple.
Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts has referred to the group in purple as “subs.”
Aside from the third day of training camp (April 29), Heal and Makurat have not participated with the group wearing black during Mercury practices and Tuesday’s shootaround.
